Middlesbrough Council – Library Service

The project will see Middlesbrough Libraries come together with Middlesbrough Community Learning and the local Alzheimer’s Society to create a book of life stories and experiences gathered from people living with dementia and their carers.

The Library Service works with the Alzheimer’s Society to run dementia cafes in three library locations. As the cafes have grown, carers have talked about their experiences, and the people they care for have shared their memories of work, childhood and the local area. These thoughts and memories are so valuable and moving, but have never been recorded. A creative writer from Middlesbrough Community Learning will work to capture the experiences and feelings of looking after a loved one with dementia and also explore further the memories and stories of those living with dementia. These will then be used to create a book of life stories, memories and experiences that can be treasured and shared with others, creating a lasting legacy.

All partners and those involved will come together to officially launch the book in Middlesbrough. The completion of the book will not be the end of the story. The book will be added to the shelves of all libraries in Middlesbrough, and will be used to raise awareness of dementia, reduce stigma and show that people can live well with dementia.
